Red Velvet.....

Despite being (painfully) single this year, I wanted to do something creative and celebratory. Something sweet! So I baked cookies (from scratch) for the entire family this Valentine's Day weekend.

And I chose red velvet cookies. You read that right. NOT cake but red velvet cookies!

I basically took a red velvet cake recipe and modified it to cookie form.

And they turned out great!

Their lightly crisp glaze gives a nice crunch while the cookie itself is soft and perfectly chewy on the inside. Sinfully sweet with light chocolate undertones and the distinct hint of buttermilk. And of course they're a wonderfully intense RED!

Where's the recipe you ask?

Well the perfectionist in me is still tweaking things here and there. A couple small changes and I'll have these cookies right where I want them.

In the meantime, I'll have one or two....or three (!) on everyone's behalf.

I'm hoping you all had a Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy V-Day!

And OH CRAP on the picture, you are making me hungry! Going to raid the kitchen now, please god let me find something with lots of sugar....

Oh wow. Those look awesome! I made a TON of cupcakes for my friends, since I'm single and have plenty of time to bake! Haha
Happy Valentine's Day!

Yum! Hope you'll post the recipe for us... Those would be perfect with a tall cold glass of milk!

Happy Valentines, Dean!

Those look and sound simply delicious!

(And your blog needs an automatic cookie dispenser function.)

They certainly do look tasty. Having been single for 68 St. Valentine's Days, I didn't do anything especially Valentiney, and it's okay. But I'm sure I'd have enjoyed one of those cookies. I'd have enjoyed two or three that much more!

But having just spent a couple of hours composing my latest blogpost, I'm getting powerful hungry, so I think I'll go have some dinner.

I hope your day was made happy by having made the cookies.

affects your dreams, i dreamed about your
red velvet cookies! heh.

Haha. So no recipe until you've perfected it to your taste then?

Well, I'm sure it's worth the wait.

You're so creative even with baking, Dean. :)

Now that's creative. Love the dish too!!

I know it's probably not much consolation, but I think I'd rather be "painfully single" as you put it, than dealing with my husband choosing to have screwed the ugliest chick on the planet over his pretty wife....

Anyway, hope your Valentine's Day was a good one....just pop some random names in a hat and pull one, then you'll have a valentine that you want...I'm putting Mr. Depp and Mr. Jackman in my hat LOL

I thought of you yesterday, and was hoping that you weren't feeling lonely.
The cookies look marvelous. I'm not much of a sweet eater (crazy, right?) but I sure do love the way they look, and am so jealous of the plate! I love plates!! I'm a plate-a-holic.
Happy February15th!

Well I'm baking & cooking too a bit, so that's interesting for me, but & I hate to sound creepy, looking at your last pics, if you have probs with your visual appearance 99% of the rest of the world, in other words us, have to shoot themselves, just saying.

I'm such a tease!

Yep, white chocolate chips were added to the cookies!

They're delicious!!

I guess all us single people are just baking on Valentine's Day, huh?

R. Burnett Baker!

Rick, I have to have milk with these!

A cookie dispenser function sounds unrealistic yet so cool!

68 Valentine's Days? Really? Man, that's rough!

Happy Valentine's Day back at ya!

Brody, I'll get the recipe posted....someday!

I love that little plate!

i'm a superhero i can like fly and shit!

Oh! That must've been some dream!

Kenny, I just didn't want to post the recipe now only to have changed it several times down the road, you know?

Bouncin' Barb!

Thank you!

C. Alvarez!

I'm sorry to hear your husband did that.

Can a name I picked out of a hat really be my valentine if that person doesn't know about it? LOL

Tweak, tweak, tweak!

Thanks for thinking of me.

My mom actually picked out that plate. It's charmingly small....perfect for a cookie or two!

I'll try to post the final recipe ASAP!

David Allen Waters!

They're already gone! Sorry!

LOL at "wish we were family".

Violet Moonbeam!

That's very kind of you!

I do live on the south side of Chicago. Does that count as "southern", Sean?

Ken (Bucko)!

Having the cookie sit on a plain, old napkin just wouldn't do!

Everyone's enthusiastic comments are greatly appreciated!

Melancholy State said...

hahaha! yes, it can. One of the blog's I followed said in the weeeee olden days, the tradition was that the whole town did that, and the name you picked was your valentine....he further said he's pretty sure swingers still use that method (though I heard it was keys).

Anyway, if it's someone famous, just send them a twitter saying you pulled their name out of a hat and you'd like a bright shiny new car for Valentine's LOL

And for you, I created a Wordless Wednesday post.

Dang! they look good! Now I want some. please post that recipe soon!

Dean Grey said...

C. Alvarez!

I don't know, girl. Declaring a celebrity as my valentine (without them approving) sounds kind of stalker-ish.

I appreciate that!

Petit Penseur Perdu!

I love that you love my blog!

I just checked out your Wordless Wednesday post, Nikki!

They taste even better!

Thanks to all of you for stopping by!

She Who Shall Not Be Named!

Well, it was a standard Red Velvet Cake recipe that I simply modified into cookie you just might be able to figure it out!
