Despite being (painfully) single this year, I wanted to do something creative and celebratory. Something sweet! So I baked cookies (from scratch) for the entire family this Valentine's Day weekend.
And I chose red velvet cookies. You read that right. NOT cake but red velvet cookies!

Ta-da!
And they turned out great!
Their lightly crisp glaze gives a nice crunch while the cookie itself is soft and perfectly chewy on the inside. Sinfully sweet with light chocolate undertones and the distinct hint of buttermilk. And of course they're a wonderfully intense RED!
Where's the recipe you ask?
Well the perfectionist in me is still tweaking things here and there. A couple small changes and I'll have these cookies right where I want them.

Mmmmm.....
In the meantime, I'll have one or two....or three (!) on everyone's behalf.

Mmmhmmm.....
I'm hoping you all had a Happy Valentine's Day!

You are killing me! They look wonderful!! (and hey, nothing wrong with being home on Valentines; you're not alone!!)
Dean, what an ingenious idea, I'd love to try the recipe. White chocolate chips inside too? Mmmmmm!!!!!
Happy Valentine's Day! xoxo Mona
OMG! These look SO good! :)
Happy V-Day!
And OH CRAP on the picture, you are making me hungry! Going to raid the kitchen now, please god let me find something with lots of sugar....
Oh wow. Those look awesome! I made a TON of cupcakes for my friends, since I'm single and have plenty of time to bake! Haha
Happy Valentine's Day!
Yum! Hope you'll post the recipe for us... Those would be perfect with a tall cold glass of milk!
Happy Valentines, Dean!
Rick
Those look and sound simply delicious!
(And your blog needs an automatic cookie dispenser function.)
They certainly do look tasty. Having been single for 68 St. Valentine's Days, I didn't do anything especially Valentiney, and it's okay. But I'm sure I'd have enjoyed one of those cookies. I'd have enjoyed two or three that much more!
But having just spent a couple of hours composing my latest blogpost, I'm getting powerful hungry, so I think I'll go have some dinner.
I hope your day was made happy by having made the cookies.
Happy Valentine's Day, Dean!!!
Take care!
Wow, looks great! Can't wait for the recipe!
The plate works very well with the cookie.... very subtly composed and exquisite. :)
proof that what you do right before bed
affects your dreams, i dreamed about your
red velvet cookies! heh.
Haha. So no recipe until you've perfected it to your taste then?
Well, I'm sure it's worth the wait.
You're so creative even with baking, Dean. :)
Kenny
Now that's creative. Love the dish too!!
I know it's probably not much consolation, but I think I'd rather be "painfully single" as you put it, than dealing with my husband choosing to have screwed the ugliest chick on the planet over his pretty wife....
Anyway, hope your Valentine's Day was a good one....just pop some random names in a hat and pull one, then you'll have a valentine that you want...I'm putting Mr. Depp and Mr. Jackman in my hat LOL
Those look amazing..I would love the recipe once your tweeking is done :)
I thought of you yesterday, and was hoping that you weren't feeling lonely.
The cookies look marvelous. I'm not much of a sweet eater (crazy, right?) but I sure do love the way they look, and am so jealous of the plate! I love plates!! I'm a plate-a-holic.
Happy February15th!
I want that recipe! Every year, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, my cousins and I get together and bake tons of cookies for the Holidays. Red Velvet Cookies! Gotta have 'em. Please, please, please post the recipe!
hey send some of those beautyies across the lake PLEASE:)
Dean! Those look so amazing that I wish we were family and 3000 miles closer! :) Maybe I'll post a pic of the Valentine's I passed out a bit later over on my blog :) merfy-lou.blogspot.com

Well I'm baking & cooking too a bit, so that's interesting for me, but & I hate to sound creepy, looking at your last pics, if you have probs with your visual appearance 99% of the rest of the world, in other words us, have to shoot themselves, just saying.
red velvet cookies? are you sure you're not a Southern boy?

hahaha! yes, it can. One of the blog's I followed said in the weeeee olden days, the tradition was that the whole town did that, and the name you picked was your valentine....he further said he's pretty sure swingers still use that method (though I heard it was keys).
Anyway, if it's someone famous, just send them a twitter saying you pulled their name out of a hat and you'd like a bright shiny new car for Valentine's LOL
I am your 800th follower!
congrats. YOU ARE SPECIAL :)
Hey :) i love your blog, and id love if you followed mine
Those pictures made me so hungry.
And for you, I created a Wordless Wednesday post.
Dang! they look good! Now I want some. please post that recipe soon!
C. Alvarez!
I don't know, girl. Declaring a celebrity as my valentine (without them approving) sounds kind of stalker-ish.

-Dean
Oh my word, those look so delicious! I really want that recipe! I guess I'll just have to figure it out...
She Who Shall Not Be Named!
Well, it was a standard Red Velvet Cake recipe that I simply modified into cookie form....so you just might be able to figure it out!
