Watercolor and ink on watercolor paper - 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" (NFS)
The painting was relatively small so it was quick to paint but still a challenge. There's tons of detail in this piece especially in the fur.
The hardest part was getting the dog's coat to have that glossy sheen and not look flat. I also wanted to capture that subtle glowing effect on the eyes. There were several times where I thought for sure that I fucked it up and would have to start all over again.
Everything was done in watercolors except the blacks which were done in ink. I used a combination of brush, dip pen, and technical pen for all the inkwork.
I'm really pleased with the way this turned out!

This is frickin awesome! Why can't you get a job as an artist yet? lol...dude, I don't know Classical from Baroque from Modern, but I do know talent when I see it...and you def have it. The fur is simply amazing, so is the rendering of her eyes...perfect!

I love art blogs, it's like a form of expression in a post, but no words are required. Each takes what they want to or can from the image. It's harder to do that with mere words, I think.

Superbly done! In order to achieve a high standard of realism, you need to get the light right....here you have captured it in an amazing fashion, including the eyes which are his windows to the world. The blue and red really makes it sing!

This is one of the best pet portraits I've seen in a long time! I think it's my favorite even! You really captured the endearing personality and your friend must have been thrilled and delighted. I love the red collar and blue harness and the bell, and the touch of blue in the eyes really integrates the colors.

My friend loved the portrait. She framed it up really nice and displays "Velvet" prominently in her home.

This is not easy to do, with my limited knowledge and experience anyhow, and I find it absolutely beautiful. Everything in the whole painting stands out and each detail compliments the other. Those eyes!
